Uses for Topical Marijuana

Marijuana (also commonly known as cannabis) has seen a huge surge in popularity for medical uses in the past decade. With multiple U.S. states legalizing the use of medical marijuana, many people are looking for ways to enjoy the many benefits without the risks of smoking it. Topical products are just one way people are experimenting with medical marijuana.

Topical marijuana products are simply products that are applied to the skin that contain THC and/or CBD. Purchasing products containing THC requires a prescription, while CBD topicals are available to be purchased by anyone aged 18 or older and sold at many retail locations.

Most research done on topical marijuana products is related to pain and inflammation relief. However, new and exciting research is being done on a multitude of other symptoms, with promising results so far.

Studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that topical marijuana is effective in treating many conditions, including:

  • Pain
  • Soreness
  • Inflammation
  • Arthritis
  • Neuropathy
  • Acne
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Temporomandibular disorder (TMD)
  • Aging of the skin

Marijuana topicals are available in various forms, including:

  • Creams
  • Lotions
  • Oils
  • Ointments
  • Balms
  • Patches

The intended use and location of application will determine which type of topical is right for you. For example, if you are experiencing knee pain, a cream or lotion containing THC or CBD may be applied directly to the affected area. Applied this way, very little, if any of the active ingredient(s) enter the bloodstream, so there is no chance of impairment from using these products.

Transdermal patches are the exception. These potent patches are adhered to the skin at the affected site. Since transdermal patches do transfer THC and/or CBD into the bloodstream, pay special attention to the amount of each contained in each patch. High levels of THC in transdermal patches can lead to the high feeling associated with smoking marijuana. CBD does not induce these psychoactive effects.
